Butterfly at the Zoo

I haven't posted in quite a long time for two reasons. My last post was nearing the fall and the bugs just aren't around and little Grace was born 4 months ago. I have been getting out and we took Grace to the Zoo so I have some shots from that trip.

This is a shot I got at the Garden Center there at the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC. Used the 100mm Canon, F10, 430 EX Diffused and -1/3, Manual focus, and 1:1. This butterfly landed close to me so I maneuvered around and got my hand extended from the bottom side of the lens. I had just enough room to pull the flower with the butterfly into perfect focus. Butterflies are skittish so I was surprised it let me pull it closer to the camera lens. With summer on I hope to get a lot more shots and to finally get some extension tubes.

Carolina Locust on Blue

Found this one limping around in the mums up front and you could see some of the damage this one and the other locust had dealt out. These are considered the "least" destructive locust but they are still destructive to your garden. They are pretty inquisitive creatures...crawled all around me and on me but never really hopped away.

Shot with 100mm 2.8 canon, 1:1, -2/3, 430 EX, AWB, ISO 100, 1/200, F11, and non diffused.

Bugs love flowers :)

How do you use your proboscis?

This butterfly was nice enough to let me get a few shots of him. I only have one processed right now and I like it.

100mm 2.8 Canon, Ap 8.0, 100 ISO, 430 EX -1/3, 45 angle.

Enjoy

How's it Hanging?

I got ONE shot today...got lucky.

Shot with the 100mm 2.8 canon macro, 200 ISO, 430 EX -2/3, 1/200, and good timing.

I have found myself just really comfortable around Honey Bees, Bumbles, and Wasps. Amazing what a little practice will do huh :)

Puff the Magic Dragon Fly

Shot with the 100mm 2.8 a couple of varied apertures about 13-16 all at ISO 100, 430 EX flash (non diffused) and -2/3. 1:1 during the hottest part of the day and a bit of wind. Had to get my mom to hold the branch with both hands so he would stop moving while I was trying to take the pics.

Peek A Boo Bee

It cooled off a little while I was in Va visiting my parents and the bee's started coming out so I decided to try and get some shots.

I was having some problems balancing so I used a shovel handle to stabilize the camera as I took some shots. Used the XTI, 430 EX (-2/3), 100 ISO, Ap was 13, and 1/200

Good chance to bait so my mom and I put out some strawberries and some organic sweetener. Oddly enough it didn't work for quite some time but finally I got some shots. This was my favorite shot of the day.
